Changing website developers: what to check before a rebuild

Start a change of developer by reviewing the current website. Establish access, required features and content before commissioning a rebuild.

You want to change the person maintaining your website, improve a few elements or finally regain editing access. Describe what gets in the way of your work. “I need a new website” may be the right decision, but it is worth reviewing the current one first.

Here, taking over maintenance means agreeing access, responsibility and further work on the existing website.

Describe the problem so it can be checked

Replace a general “the website is old” with specifics: the offer is outdated, a photo cannot be changed, the form does not work or the layout makes phone use difficult. Add the page address and steps to reproduce the problem.

Also identify what needs to stay. This could include important copy, existing URLs, a form or a connection to another service. A list of required features lets us assess the scope without assuming everything must be replaced.

Do not send customer data or passwords in your initial description. Information for the review can use examples with confidential details removed.

Gather access and documentation

Establish who manages the domain, hosting and editing panel. Record providers, support contact details and backup locations. If the previous developer holds some permissions, include their handover in the plan.

For a WordPress website, the review should cover the system, theme and plugin versions and the features in use. WordPress documentation recommends a backup before an update. Clicking “update” is not a complete work plan. WordPress instructions.

Separate organisational gaps from website faults. An outdated account recovery address needs different work from a broken mobile layout.

Agree the outcome of the review

Once the situation has been checked, the next step can be agreed. If the website meets the business’s needs, the scope may focus on access and documentation. A problem in one component may need a limited repair. Consider a rebuild when the current solution cannot reasonably meet the agreed needs.

These options are a starting point for discussion. The decision depends on the website’s condition, available materials and accepted scope, not its age alone.

For migration, responsibility for content, URLs, email and external connections must be agreed separately. A hosting change should not appear halfway through the work as an unexplained extra.

Document acceptance and ongoing care

Define how you will recognise that the agreed work is complete: which problems should be resolved, which features will be checked and what the owner will receive. Record limitations and how to reverse a significant change where the scope requires it.

Maintenance after the work is agreed separately. A one-off improvement does not automatically include ongoing updates, monitoring or a guaranteed response time.

With CyberKlucz, you can agree on taking over and organising an existing website. Start with its address, a description of the problem and a list of available panels. That is enough to establish the next step.
